Not everyone can be a certified firefighter, so on this page we will explain to you how the younger generation can become firefighters.
We are looking for more cadets, anyone interested can pick up and application at the South Station.

About the Cadet Program

The Cadet program is for teenagers 14 years of age or older who want to start learning the trade of being a firefighter.  The program is directed by senior department member "Skip" Carey.  He shows the teenagers what it is like to be a firefighter and in some situation they do exactly what the firefighters do but it is on drill nights. Ex: Work with hoses on burning buildings, use the hydraulic equipment, as well as other important tasks firefighters have. 

 

     1.All cadets are required to follow the following cadet Code of conduct, in addition to the rule and regulations of the O.P.V.F.D.

      2.Cadets are required to meet the following minimum percentages within a six month period

    • 50% of departmental meetings and drills
    • 50% of cadet meetings and drills
    • 1/3 of the calls for which you are available for service(see rule 4)

Credit for calls, meetings, and drills will be given only after the cadet has been officially dismissed from the call meeting or drill

      3. If the minumum requirements are not met within six months, you will be officially notified by letter.  If the minimum requirments are not met within the six months following the letter you will be disenrolled from the cadet program.

      4.  The term "being available" shall heretofor mean: not between 2200 hrs and 1500 hrs sunday through friday during the school year.  Cadet hours are not restricted durring school holidays and vacations.

      5.  Cadets in high school are expected to maintain a minimum of scholastic acheivment.  This will be defined as a "c" average overall.  Failure to maintan the minimum average will result in a warning.  A secound offense will result in a temporary suspension untill interim reports can be reviewed by Cadet instructors.  If minimum requirement is not met by the next report card the cadet will be unenrolled from the cadet program.

CADET GUIDLINES

          6.   Cadets will be responsible for all articles issued to them by the department.  Any articles lost must be reported in writing to the Cadet Instructors.  Failure to report and lost articles will result in disenrollment from the cadet program.  All articles issued by the Department shall be available for inspection upon the request of the Cadet Instructors, the Quartermaster, or any department line Officer.

      7.Cadets will be ineligible to enroll in MFRI classes until the age of 17.  Cadets eligible for MFRI classes must obtain the permission of the Chief  of the Department before enrolling in any class.  Cadets not meeting the minimum requirments will not be eligible for classes.

      8.  Cadets will not be issued station keys and are not permitted to be at either station except during scheduled events and calls without the supervision of a responsible Department member willing to take such responsibility.

       9. During fire calls cadets are to respond to their respective station, don turnout gear and report to the officer in charge (OIC) if the responding unit.  The OIC will assign cadets to any  available positions on the apparatus.  Cadets who are left at the station will stand by, at the station, awaiting a crew for the next piece of apparatus.  Cadets who leave the station without permission will not recieve credit for the alarm.  Cadets ARE NOT TO RESPOND TO THE SCENE IN PRIVATLY OWNED VEHICLES. Cadets responding to the scene POV will be suspended for 30 days for the first offese.  A secound offense will result in dissenrollment from the cadet program.  The only exception to this rule is if the incident Commander requests more manpower at the scene of an emergency, and there is no driver for the remaining apparatus(if and remains).

       10.At the scene of an emergency all cadets will report either to the OIC of the apparatus, or if the OIC is unavailable, to the engineer for instructions.  CADETS ARE FIRE GROUND SUPPORT ONLY.  Your safety is our utmost concern.  If your assignment requiers you to go within 30 feet of any incident, you must be supervised by a qualified fire fighter.  Cadets who do not have assignments will stage at a common area outside the incident zone.  If a cadet is assigned to complete a task Hr/she is incapable of, he/she will inform the person who gave the command.  When an assignment has been completed, the cadet(s) will report back to the person who gave the command so that they know it has been completed.  If another assignment is not given the cadet will report to the cadet staging area.
